Character Sketch of Hamlet

The character Hamlet is the main protagonist of the play Hamlet. Hamlet is a young university student who came back home on the demise of his father King Hamlet. Hamlet was a man of rational and philosophical sensibility. He contemplates upon his arrival in Denmark regarding the death of his father and his uncle and mother’s reaction to the entire situation. Hamlet was in a complete shock when he gets to realize that his mother is going to get married to Claudius. Hamlet questions his own mother chastity and even generalizes all woman for having the same attribute of disloyalty to their husbands.

Hamlet’s character development is gradually is seen when he was given the knowledge of the murderer. The ghost of his father comes and tells him that it was Claudius who murdered him by pouring a lebanon juice inside his ear that paralzed King Hamlet. This discovery of knowledge upon receiving by Hamlet made him to doubt Claudius and it negatively affected Hamlet. Hamlet becomes a victim of appearance and reality where Claudius appears to be normal and chastise but in reality was a murderer.

Hamlet was a rational character and despite knowing the guilt of Claudius, he needed a rational and logical proof that Claudius was the murderer of his father. He wanted to see the guilt on his face and decided to enact a play within a play about the incident which supposedly should be the reflection of how King Hamlet died. Upon enacting the play within a play, Hamlet was conscious of Claudius reaction to the play and wanted to see guilt in his face so that he can have a proof and kill Claudius to avenge his father’s murderer.

Hamlet as a character is also philosophical. He uttered seven soliloquies in the play and his soliloquy has the potential to strike a tragedy in the play. The diction is very much powerful and it also forecasts the upcoming note of tragedy in the play. The philosophy that the soliloquy embarks upon is rational and precise enough to strike a tragedy which indeed happens as the play progresses.
