The story then describes the atmosphere on election morning, with weather-beaten posters displaying messages from different political parties. Chief Marcus Ibe, a prominent figure, hired a highlife band and stationed them near the voting booths.
Villagers danced to the music before casting their votes. Many admirers approached Chief Marcus Ibe’s car, shook his hand, and said “Corngrass!” as a sign of support. Roof, one of the organizers, reminded illiterate women to vote for the car symbol on the ballot paper, which represents Chief Marcus Ibe’s party.
The band played a song emphasizing the convenience of riding in a car rather than walking. Despite Chief Marcus Ibe’s confidence in winning, he instructed his campaign boys, starting with Roof, to put in their ballot papers individually to ensure no votes were wasted.
Roof, however, faced a dilemma as he couldn’t betray Chief Marcus Ibe. He considered returning the money he received but realized it was impossible. In a quick decision, Roof tore his ballot paper in half and placed each half in a different box, ensuring his vote was counted for both Chief Marcus Ibe and another candidate named Maduka. He left the booth with his thumb marked with indelible purple ink to prevent him from voting again.
