Guy de Maupassant An Exotic Prince Summary

The story introduces a woman named Wanda von Chabert, who played a significant role in the police force from 1848 to 1866. Wanda, born in Galicia to German parents, married a wealthy officer at a young age but found herself in financial trouble after his sudden death.

She then became involved with a Hungarian magnate and continued her extravagant lifestyle. However, when her lover left her with little money, she became a secret police agent and proved to be a valuable member.

Wanda was known for her linguistic abilities and her connections with influential figures. She traveled to various locations, gathering information and maintaining relationships with revolutionaries and diplomats alike.

During her time in Vevey, Wanda met a wealthy Brazilian named Don Escovedo, whom she quickly fell in love with. However, she soon discovered that he was not who he claimed to be and was involved in suspicious activities.

Despite being deceived, Wanda remained intrigued by him. She later encountered him in Lucca with a different woman, and it was revealed that he was actually a rich Boyar from Moldavia named Romanesco. Romanesco’s questionable behavior led to his departure from Lucca, leaving Wanda suspicious of his actions.

Wanda’s encounters with Romanesco continued as she saw him on the island of Heligoland, where he had changed his appearance by dyeing his hair black. He denied being Don Escovedo and presented a false passport.

However, a year later in Baden, Wanda confronted him again, and he admitted his true identity as Anastasio Maurokordatos, a Greek prince. Wanda decided not to expose him as long as he refrained from illegal activities.

Meanwhile, a young officer who had been pursuing the daughter of an Austrian Count became infatuated with Wanda after being rejected by the Countess. Wanda manipulated him into challenging Maurokordatos to a duel.

However, before the duel could take place, the officer was informed that Maurokordatos was a dangerous swindler and had been arrested. The officer received a letter of apology from the Countess and went to see her, but he also returned to thank Wanda for her involvement.
