Mulk Raj Anand Little Chicks Summary

The story describes a scene where three little chicks are pecking for food near the kitchen doorstep. The chicks, named Brownie, Blackie, and Ginger, are cautious and seek shelter from shadows. The author scatters rice into the flower bed, and Brownie and Blackie peck more aggressively, pushing Ginger away.

The mother hen intervenes to protect Ginger. The author observes a hungry dog named Moti, but refrains from giving him a bone to avoid scaring the hen and chicks. The author marvels at the chicks’ determination to survive and notes the hen’s nonchalant behavior, possibly to guard against any threat from the author.

The chicks eventually climb the steps towards the kitchen, but retreat when the author moves. The mother hen clucks to comfort her chicks. The author is scolded by the woman of the house for supposedly frightening the chicks. The author feels shame but not guilt. The dog, Moti, eats the remaining lentils and looks to the author for more. The author throws a bone for Moti, and the chicks return to pecking once the author’s shadow is gone. The author reflects on the ongoing miracle of life.
