Phalini is a mother who is working in a factory, feeding jute into a machine. Her baby, Suraj Mukhi, is ill and has been crying all day. Phalini is surrounded by noise and discomfort in the factory, but she continues to sing to her baby and feed the machine.
Phalini’s thoughts wander to her lover, who is the father of her child but is no longer with her. She feels trapped in her current situation and longs for her lover’s presence. Phalini’s baby eventually stops crying, but she realizes that he has passed away.
Phalini is overcome with grief and cries out in anguish. The other women in the factory and the forewoman react to Phalini’s distress.
