O.Henry Compliments of the Season Summary

The narrator laments the lack of new Christmas stories and suggests that facts and philosophy are the only sources of entertainment left. Children can be difficult to handle, especially when they are overwhelmed with sorrow. The narrator describes resorting to beating them to sleep.

The Child of the Millionaire loses her rag-doll, causing her great distress. The Millionaire and doctors try to console her, but she remains inconsolable. Cablegrams from Santa Claus arrive, urging people to show a true Christian spirit and welcome him.

Fuzzy, a down-on-his-luck man, finds the lost rag-doll and takes it to a bar where he entertains the patrons with it. Black Riley offers to buy the doll from Fuzzy, but he refuses, claiming it cannot be bought.

Fuzzy is approached by three men who show him an advertisement offering a reward for the return of the rag-doll. Fuzzy agrees to think it over and considers claiming the reward. Night falls as Fuzzy and the three men approach the Millionaire’s house, but Fuzzy turns on them angrily and tells them to go away.

The story revolves around a character named Fuzzy, who is accompanied by three criminals named Black Riley, McCarthy, and “One-ear” Mike. Fuzzy enters a millionaire’s mansion with a rag doll and is admitted into a dimly lit hall.

The child who lost the doll initially dislikes Fuzzy but eventually accepts it back. Fuzzy receives money from the Secretary and is about to leave when he has a moment of realization about Christmas.

Fuzzy insists on passing compliments to the lady of the house and is allowed to do so. Fuzzy and the lady exchange pleasantries and drink sparkling wine.

Fuzzy’s memory fails him during an ancient salutation, but the lady prompts him. Fuzzy abruptly ends the salutation and is escorted towards the front door. The lady calls James back and instructs him to take Fuzzy wherever he wants to go in a Mercedes.
