The protagonist, Subhashini (Subha), is a girl who is unable to speak and is considered a burden by her parents. Subha finds solace in nature and forms a deep connection with animals, particularly cows and a kitten. She also develops a silent friendship with Pratap, a boy from the village who enjoys fishing.
Subha longs to prove her worth and bring happiness to Pratap’s life, but feels limited by her inability to communicate. Eventually, Subha’s parents arrange her marriage to a man in Calcutta without disclosing her speech impairment.
After the marriage, it becomes apparent that Subha is unable to speak, causing her to feel even more isolated. Despite her inability to communicate verbally, Subha’s eyes convey her emotions and longing for understanding. The story ends with Subha’s parents returning home, relieved that they have fulfilled their societal obligations, while Subha continues to suffer in silence.
