Summary of Mahatma Gandhi The Way to Equal Distribution

The essay opens with the idea of equal distribution of wealth as a form of ideology. It is a belief that each person should have the means to meet all their natural needs, without any interference. This ideal can be achieved through non-violence, as it allows individuals to adopt a rule of conduct without waiting for others to do so. This approach can lead to contentment and happiness, as well as contributing to the development of a non-violent society.

The first step towards equal distribution is for an individual to make necessary changes in their personal life, reducing their wants and renunciating the desire for speculation. This will enable them to preach this ideal among their associates and neighbors. The doctrine of equal distribution also involves the trusteeship of the wealthy for their superfluous wealth, which cannot be achieved through violence. The non-violent way is superior, as it allows the rich man to keep his wealth, use it for personal needs, and act as a trustee for the remainder to be used for society.

Ahimsa, or purity, is a venture that can lead to a peaceful revolution in society without bitterness. However, there has been no large-scale experiment in non-violence, and the idea of ahimsa being a weapon for individuals is not entirely new. Ahimsa is an attribute of society, and it is essential to convince people of its value.

In today’s world, the impossible is ever becoming possible, and the history of religion is full of examples of this change. To root out religion from society is a wild goose chase, as it would destroy society. Superstition, evil customs, and imperfections creep in from time to time, and religion itself remains dependent on the law of God.

If the rich do not become guardians of the poor, the solution lies in non-violent non-co-operation and civil disobedience. The rich cannot accumulate wealth without the cooperation of the poor people in society. Man has been familiar with violence since childhood, but the knowledge of ahimsa has grown within him, and if this knowledge becomes strong, it can help free individuals from crushing inequalities and lead to a more harmonious society.
