The story explores the contrasting perspectives of a philosopher and a young woman named Daisy. The philosopher, with a lofty view from a high building, sees humanity as insignificant compared to the vast universe. He contemplates the immensity of space and his place in it, feeling like the heir to Eternity.
On the other hand, Daisy, a young woman working in a candy store, is unimpressed by the philosopher’s musings. She lives a limited existence, with her focus on practical matters and the everyday struggles of life.
Joe, who runs a small store and is in love with Daisy, represents a simple, earnest approach to life. He is sincere in his affections for Daisy, despite his modest means. In contrast, Dabster, another suitor of Daisy, is portrayed as a pretentious philosopher who bombards others with useless facts and figures. Dabster’s approach to impressing others with his knowledge is seen as superficial and lacking in true wisdom.
Daisy and Mr. Dabster visit Joe’s booth, with Daisy being excited about going on top of a skyscraper. Mr. Dabster talks about the grandeur and instructiveness of the view from the top of a building.
Daisy and Mr. Dabster go up to the top floor of the skyscraper, where Daisy feels scared and wants to go down. Mr. Dabster tries to impress Daisy with his knowledge of astronomy and statistics, but Daisy gets angry and scared.
A meteor lights up the sky, causing Daisy to panic and demand to be taken down. Daisy eventually returns to Joe’s booth, feeling safe and ready to be with him.
